Project Brief
Project Title: U.S. Forest Ranger Safety Equipment
Department: Safety and Equipment Development Division
Objective
The U.S. Forest Service seeks to develop new safety equipment to enhance the protection, efficiency, and operational effectiveness of rangers working in diverse and often hazardous environments. This initiative aims to address specific challenges faced by personnel engaged in activities such as trail construction and maintenance, search and rescue operations, wildlife management, and other backcountry duties.
Scope of Work
The proposed safety equipment must be designed to mitigate risks associated with environmental hazards, physical strain, unpredictable terrain, and exposure to extreme weather conditions. The equipment should integrate modern materials and ergonomic design principles to ensure durability, comfort, and ease of use in field conditions.
Key Considerations

-
Environmental Adaptability: Must function effectively across varying climates and terrains, including mountainous regions, wetlands, deserts, and dense forests.
-
Durability & Longevity: Designed for prolonged use in rugged outdoor conditions, resistant to wear and environmental damage.
-
Ranger Mobility & Comfort: Should allow for full range of motion, minimize fatigue, and be adjustable for different body types.
-
Emergency Preparedness: Incorporation of features that enhance safety during critical situations, such as search and rescue operations or sudden wildlife encounters.
-
Compliance & Sustainability: Must adhere to federal safety regulations and prioritize environmentally responsible materials where possible.
This initiative will play a crucial role in enhancing ranger effectiveness and overall workplace safety.
What are the uniform requirements for a female U.S. Forest Ranger?
UNIFORM COMPONENTS

Collared Shirt

Pants/Skirt
Outerwear
Hats
The mixing of uniform components with civilian clothing is not permitted except for under special circumstances such as high visibility safety gear. However, religion is always an exception to the rules.
"When others see the diversity of people who wear the same Forest Service uniform, they see a reflection of our respect for diversity in all things."

HIJAB GUIDELINES
Hijab: an umbrella term for a Muslim head covering
There is no specific fabric, color, or shape required for the hijab.
Hijabs can have symbols and logos as long as they are not bad words or
non Islamic belief symbols (e.g. Cross, Star of David, etc.)
Caps can be worn under the hijab for extra security.

How might we create a hijab that protects female Muslim rangers from the elements while allowing them to comfortably and securely adhere to religious standards?
